Although researchers have faced lab closures and disruption of experiments amid the coronavirus pandemic, a wave of COVID-19-related articles has contributed to an overall surge in research results in 2020, the German-British academic publishing group said.

Kyoto University and Osaka University ranked 37th and 65th, respectively, in the latest survey based on institutions’ contributions to research articles published in 82 natural science journals that are chosen by an independent group of researchers.

Other high-ranking Asian institutions included the China University of Science and Technology in 11th place and the National University of Singapore in 29th.

In the ranking of institutions that have achieved significant increases in research output during the period 2019-2020, dubbed “rising stars”, the Japanese state-sponsored Riken research institute took seventh place, while that Nagoya University was 10th.

Japan was the fifth country in terms of search results, after the United States, China, Germany and Great Britain.
